Low-tech. Zombies. MMO. RPG. Free.
Yeah, where do I sign up? Oh, right...
A turn-based, low-tech, survival horror game in which players may take on the roles of humans struggling to live or the zombies struggling to keep them from living... Or both!
Death is not the end in the city of Malton. Composed of a 10 x 10 grid of suburbs (each composed of another 10 x 10 grid), players move about the map and try to find their place in this world.
A little blog entry cannot hope to encompass the scope of this long-running gem. Hell, a huge blog entry couldn't do it, either. Suffice to say that a survival-horror game in which zombies have developed their own language and culture has gotten pretty deep. No, I'm totally not joking. Check the wiki if you doubts me.
Anyhoo...
The basic game play is simple:
You gain 1 action point per half hour and can save up to 50 at any time. That gives you up to 50 actions you can perform (some of which take more than one Action Point).
As a human, you can try to improve your lot by building barricades, repairing generators, and attempting to return ruined or ransacked buildings to something resembling a liveable state (pun intended). Several classes of humans are available to players. From a regular Joe (the plumber?), a civilian, to military or even a scientist attempting to cure the infection, there are a lot of options.
And a lot of skills.
Each class has their own tree and their own ways of getting better at what they do. The best laid plans, of course, can go dead wrong (Whee! Puns!).
Enter the zombie...
Humans who die have a strong tendency to not remain that way for long. Even the dead don't stay down forever. Death is only a minor nuisance in the city of Malton. Even zombiehood can be cured. Sometimes it's a bit more tenacious a condition (like for career zombies) but there are treatments that do work. So don't worry too much, right? Right!
Really, this game is ideal for zombie-gamers on the go. You can pretty much check in a couple times a day. If you have clear goals in mind, burning up your APs is very quick.
And it's free.
Seriously, try it out. You have nothing to lose.
