WYSIWYG Editing Overview

The name of this game is "What You See Is What You Get."

Pretty much exactly the way the user makes his content look in the nifty edit box is just how the end product is going to end up.  That's pretty cool if you ask us, which you didn't.

Almost all interactive, graphical word processors work nearly identically.  The upside to this is that if you can use one of them well, you can probably make good use of any similar beast.  The downside is that every word processor is programmed slightly differently, the interfaces aren't identical, and many minor differences can stack up to be a pretty large gap in perceived functionality.

All that aside, there do remain some (hopefully) universal truths:

  • Text Selection - By making use of the mouse (or hotkeys), a user may highlight an area of text (or other content).  Simply click and hold the mouse and drag it to a new position.  Everything between where the button was held down and eventually released should now be highlighted.  Simplicity!
It will probably look something like this:
  • Undo (& Redo) - Almost all editors allow you to correct errors.  For instance, if you accidently happen to select all and then delete it, you can simply Undo that last edit.  Of course, if you accidently undo something you actually meant to do, you can Redo it.  Making use of Undo and Redo can also be useful in making before and after comparisons.  One needs to be careful, however.  Not every edit can be undone and, because undo steps are stored in memory (RAM), there is a limit to how many steps back one may take.
Additionally, this is a word processor displayed in a browser window so one should consider it to be a bit less robust than a standard application.

Much of the information in the following sections can be applied to almost any other WYSIWYG word processor.  If in doubt, try it out!  Like most aspects of computing, the best way to learn is via experimentation.
